* Creating great content:

Why is content critical to ad targeting?

You may already know that AdSense works by crawling your web pages for content, then delivering ads based on that content. This means that if your content is limited, google's crawler may have difficulty identifying the information on the page. As a result, you may see ads that are not directly relevant to your page, or public service ads.

Here's a fix: Ensure that your pages are full of compelling content. The more targeted, text-based information you provide to google's crawler, the easier it will be for their system to determine what your pages are about, and the greater the relevance of the Google ads will be. This enhances the effectiveness of the AdSense program, resulting in a better experience for your users, not to mention for the advertisers appearing on your pages.

Here's a simple equation that spells it out:

A content-rich page = Highly-targeted ads
Highly-targeted ads + Interested users = Healthy clickthrough & conversion rates
Healthy clickthrough & conversion rates = Success!

Remember -- you can also use *page section targeting to focus google's crawler on certain sections of your page that may be more content-rich than others.

The Google ads appearing on your site then serve as supplemental content, providing useful information to your users that pertains to the content you've worked so hard to develop. So help google help you -- optimize your page with good content.

* Page section targeting:

What is section targeting and how do you implement it?

Section targeting allows you to suggest sections of your text and HTML content that you'd like google to emphasize or downplay when matching ads to your site's content. By providing google with your suggestions, you can assist google in improving your ad targeting. Google recommend that only those familiar with HTML attempt to implement section targeting.

To implement section targeting, you'll need to add a set of special HTML comment tags to your code. These tags will mark the beginning and end of whichever section(s) you'd like to emphasize or de-emphasize for ad targeting.

You can use section targeting to make suggestions about as many sections of a page as you like. However, please be aware that google can't guarantee results, and that it may take up to 2 weeks before google crawlers take into account any changes you've made to your site.

In order to properly implement this feature, you'll need to include a significant amount of content within the section targeting tags. Including insufficient content may result in less relevant ads or PSAs. In addition, please keep in mind that this feature should only be used to emphasize significant sections of your site's relevant content. It is against google program policies to manipulate the ad targeting to result in ads that are not relevant to the content of your pages.
